P0454: Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Intermittent

LowPowertrainDIY: Moderate

Can you still drive? Yes, perfectly safe to drive. The intermittent sensor issue only affects emissions monitoring and will not impact vehicle performance.

What Does P0454 Mean?

Code P0454 indicates that the fuel tank pressure sensor signal is fluctuating erratically or dropping in and out. Unlike P0452 or P0453 which indicate consistently low or high readings, P0454 means the signal is unstable and switching between valid and invalid values intermittently. This is often caused by a poor electrical connection.

Need to read your codes?

An OBD-II scanner lets you read and clear diagnostic trouble codes from your vehicle's computer. Most scanners work with any car made after 1996.

Common Causes

  • Loose or intermittent sensor connector
  • Corroded pins in the FTP sensor connector
  • Damaged wiring with intermittent contact
  • Failing fuel tank pressure sensor with internal intermittent fault
  • Vibration-related wiring issue near the fuel tank

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on intermittently
  • Failed emissions test
  • No drivability issues
  • Code may clear and return sporadically

Diagnostic Steps

  1. 1Monitor FTP sensor live data with a scan tool and wiggle the connector and wiring
  2. 2Inspect the sensor connector for loose pins, corrosion, or spread terminals
  3. 3Check wiring harness routing for areas where it may chafe or be stressed by vibration
  4. 4Clean and re-seat the sensor connector
  5. 5Replace the FTP sensor if the intermittent fault persists after wiring checks

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the code keep coming back after I clear it?

Intermittent codes are caused by connections that work sometimes and fail other times, often due to vibration, temperature changes, or corrosion. The root cause must be physically repaired to stop the code from returning.

Can I just clean the connector to fix P0454?

Cleaning the connector with electrical contact cleaner and ensuring the pins are tight is a good first step and resolves the issue in many cases. If the connector is in good shape, the sensor itself may be failing intermittently.
