P0453: Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor High Input

LowPowertrainDIY: Moderate

Can you still drive? Yes, this is an emissions-only code and does not affect engine performance or safety.

What Does P0453 Mean?

Code P0453 indicates that the fuel tank pressure sensor is reporting a voltage above the maximum expected threshold. This is the opposite of P0452 and typically suggests an open ground wire, a short to battery voltage in the signal wire, or an internally failed sensor sending an erroneously high signal to the ECM.

Need to read your codes?

An OBD-II scanner lets you read and clear diagnostic trouble codes from your vehicle's computer. Most scanners work with any car made after 1996.

Common Causes

  • Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor
  • Open ground wire in the FTP sensor circuit
  • Short to voltage in the sensor signal wire
  • Corroded or disconnected sensor connector
  • Water damage to sensor wiring

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Failed emissions test
  • EVAP system leak test cannot complete
  • No drivability symptoms

Diagnostic Steps

  1. 1Read FTP sensor voltage with a scan tool
  2. 2Disconnect the sensor and check if voltage drops, isolating the problem
  3. 3Test the sensor ground circuit for continuity
  4. 4Check for short to battery voltage on the signal wire
  5. 5Inspect connector and wiring for corrosion or water intrusion
  6. 6Replace the FTP sensor if tests confirm sensor failure

Campaign #26V10400020/02/2026

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2026 F-150, 2022-2026 F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, F-550 SD, Maverick, 2024-2026 Ranger, 2023-2026 F-600 SD, 2022-2027 Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, and 2026 E-Transit vehicles. When towing a trailer, the integrated trailer module (ITRM) may lose communication with the vehicle, possibly causing a loss of brake and turn signal lights, or a loss of brake function. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Remedy: The integrated trailer module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 17, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C10. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning March 17, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between P0452 and P0453?

P0452 indicates the sensor signal is too low (below minimum voltage), while P0453 indicates the signal is too high (above maximum voltage). Both point to electrical issues but with different root causes in the circuit.

Will P0453 prevent my EVAP leak test?

Yes, the ECM uses the fuel tank pressure sensor to perform EVAP leak detection tests. If the sensor reads incorrectly, the test cannot run properly, which may trigger additional EVAP-related codes.
