Oil Change

Easy

An oil change involves draining the old engine oil and replacing it with fresh oil along with a new oil filter. Regular oil changes are critical for engine longevity, as oil lubricates internal components and removes heat and contaminants. Most vehicles need an oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles depending on the oil type.

Tools Needed

  • Socket wrench set
  • Oil drain pan
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Funnel
  • Jack and jack stands

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Warm up the engine for 2-3 minutes to thin the oil, then turn it off and safely raise the vehicle on jack stands.

2

Locate the oil drain plug underneath the engine and position the drain pan beneath it.

3

Remove the drain plug with a socket wrench and allow the oil to fully drain for 5-10 minutes.

4

Remove the old oil filter using an oil filter wrench. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the gasket of the new filter and install it hand-tight.

5

Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer if needed, and torque to the manufacturer's specification.

6

Lower the vehicle, then add the correct type and amount of new oil through the oil filler cap using a funnel.

7

Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Check underneath for leaks, then turn off the engine and verify the oil level on the dipstick.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use the oil weight and type specified in your owner's manual (e.g., 0W-20 full synthetic).
  • Double-check that the old oil filter gasket came off with the old filter and is not stuck to the engine block.
  • Dispose of used oil at an auto parts store or recycling center — never pour it down a drain.
  • Check for leaks around the drain plug and filter after running the engine.
