Transmission Fluid Change
ModerateA transmission fluid change involves draining the old fluid and refilling with fresh fluid to maintain proper lubrication and hydraulic function. Transmission fluid degrades over time, losing its friction properties and ability to protect gears and clutches. Regular changes help prevent costly transmission failures.

Tools Needed
- Socket wrench set
- Drain pan
- Funnel
- Jack and jack stands
- Torque wrench
Step-by-Step Instructions
Raise the vehicle on jack stands and locate the transmission pan on the bottom of the transmission.
Place a drain pan underneath and loosen the pan bolts gradually, starting from one corner to allow the fluid to drain in a controlled manner.
Remove the pan completely and inspect the magnet on the inside for metal shavings. A small amount of fine particles is normal.
Remove the old transmission filter (if accessible) and install a new one with a new gasket or O-ring.
Clean the transmission pan thoroughly, install a new pan gasket, and reinstall the pan. Torque bolts to spec in a criss-cross pattern.
Lower the vehicle and add the correct type and amount of fresh transmission fluid through the dipstick tube or fill port using a funnel.
Start the engine, shift through all gears slowly, then check the fluid level while the transmission is at operating temperature.
Tips & Warnings
- Use only the exact transmission fluid specified by the manufacturer — the wrong fluid can cause shifting problems or damage.
- A drain-and-fill only replaces about 40-50% of the fluid. A full flush replaces nearly all of it but is more controversial on high-mileage transmissions.
- If the fluid is dark brown or smells burnt, the transmission may have internal damage and a fluid change alone may not resolve issues.
- Check for leaks at the pan gasket after driving for a few days.
