Step-by-Step Instructions

Raise the vehicle on jack stands and remove the wheels.

Disconnect the sway bar end link and any brake line or ABS sensor brackets attached to the strut.

Remove the lower strut-to-knuckle bolts. On some vehicles this requires removing the pinch bolt.

From the engine bay or trunk area, remove the upper strut mount nuts while supporting the strut from below.

Carefully lower and remove the old strut assembly from the vehicle.

If reusing the spring, use a spring compressor to safely disassemble the old strut and transfer the spring to the new strut body. Alternatively, install a complete quick-strut assembly.

Install the new strut assembly, torque all mounting bolts to specification, and reconnect the sway bar link and brackets.

Reinstall the wheels, lower the vehicle, and get a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible.

  • Quick-strut assemblies (pre-assembled with spring and mount) are strongly recommended for DIY — they eliminate the dangerous step of compressing the coil spring.
  • A wheel alignment is mandatory after strut replacement. Drive gently to the alignment shop.
  • Worn strut mounts can cause clunking noises over bumps — inspect them and replace if worn.
  • Replace struts in pairs on the same axle for balanced handling and ride quality.
