Shock Absorber Replacement

Moderate

Shock absorber replacement involves removing the worn shocks and installing new ones. Shocks dampen the oscillation of the suspension springs to control body movement and maintain tire contact with the road. Worn shocks cause excessive bouncing, nose-diving during braking, poor handling, and uneven tire wear.

Estimated time: 2-4 hours

Tools Needed

  • Socket wrench set
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Torque wrench
  • Penetrating oil
  • Impact wrench (recommended)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Raise the vehicle on jack stands and remove the wheels for access.

2

Support the axle or suspension arm with a jack to prevent it from dropping when the shock is removed.

3

Spray penetrating oil on the upper and lower mounting bolts and nuts. Allow it to soak for several minutes.

4

Remove the upper mounting nut (some vehicles require accessing this from inside the trunk or under the vehicle), then remove the lower mounting bolt.

5

Remove the old shock absorber and compare it to the new one for correct length and mounting style.

6

Install the new shock, threading the mounting hardware by hand first. Torque all fasteners to specification.

7

Repeat on the remaining shocks, reinstall the wheels, and lower the vehicle. Test drive to verify improved ride quality.

Tips & Warnings

  • Replace shocks in pairs (both fronts or both rears) to maintain balanced ride and handling.
  • The bounce test is a simple check — push down firmly on each corner of the vehicle. If it bounces more than once or twice, the shocks are worn.
  • Rear shocks on trucks and SUVs often wear faster due to load carrying.
  • Heavily rusted mounting bolts may need to be cut off. Have a bolt extraction set available.
