Serpentine Belt Replacement
EasySerpentine belt replacement involves removing the single belt that drives multiple engine accessories including the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and A/C compressor. Over time, the belt cracks, frays, or stretches, causing squealing noises and reduced accessory performance. A broken belt disables all of these systems simultaneously.

- Socket wrench set
- Flashlight
Step-by-Step Instructions
Locate the belt routing diagram on the engine or radiator support. If none exists, draw or photograph the current routing before removal.
Place the serpentine belt tool or a socket on the belt tensioner pulley and rotate it to release tension on the belt.
Slip the old belt off the pulleys while holding the tensioner back.
Inspect all pulleys for wobble, noise, or roughness by spinning them by hand. Replace any worn pulleys.
Route the new belt according to the diagram, leaving one pulley for last. Apply tension with the tool and slip the belt onto the final pulley.
Release the tensioner and visually verify the belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves.
Tips & Warnings
- Take a photo of the belt routing before removal — routing diagrams are sometimes missing or hard to read.
- Check the belt tensioner for proper spring tension. If it bounces or does not hold firm pressure, replace it.
- A squealing noise at startup or during turns often indicates a worn belt or weak tensioner.
- Keep a spare belt in the trunk for long road trips — it is an inexpensive backup that could prevent a tow.
