Step-by-Step Instructions

Identify which oxygen sensor needs replacement using a scan tool — sensors are labeled by bank and position (e.g., Bank 1 Sensor 1 is upstream).

Raise the vehicle if the sensor is underneath. Apply penetrating oil to the sensor threads and let it soak for 10-15 minutes.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the oxygen sensor.

Remove the old sensor using an oxygen sensor socket, which has a slot for the wiring harness.

Apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (avoid getting it on the sensor tip).

Thread the new sensor in by hand first, then tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

Reconnect the electrical connector, lower the vehicle, and clear the check engine codes with a scan tool.

Tips & Warnings

  • Working on a warm (not hot) exhaust makes removal easier because the metal expands slightly, freeing the threads.
  • If the sensor is seized, use a propane torch to heat the bung area of the exhaust gently — be careful around wiring and heat shields.
  • Do not use an open-end wrench on O2 sensors — the special slotted socket prevents damaging the wiring.
  • Upstream sensors (before the catalytic converter) affect fuel trim. Downstream sensors monitor converter efficiency.
