Alternator Replacement
AdvancedAlternator replacement involves removing the failing alternator and installing a new or remanufactured unit. The alternator charges the battery and powers the vehicle's electrical systems while the engine is running. A failing alternator will cause dimming lights, a dead battery, and eventually leave you stranded.

Tools Needed
- Socket wrench set
- Serpentine belt tool or breaker bar
- Multimeter
- Jack and jack stands
- Torque wrench
Step-by-Step Instructions
Disconnect the negative battery cable and locate the alternator — it is typically on the front of the engine with the serpentine belt wrapped around its pulley.
Release tension on the serpentine belt using a belt tool or breaker bar on the tensioner, and slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
Disconnect the electrical connectors and wiring from the back of the alternator.
Remove the alternator mounting bolts and pull the alternator out of the engine bay.
Compare the old and new alternators to confirm they match, then install the new unit and torque the mounting bolts to spec.
Reconnect the electrical connectors and wiring to the new alternator.
Route the serpentine belt back onto the alternator pulley and release the tensioner. Reconnect the battery.
Start the engine and verify proper charging voltage (13.5-14.5V) at the battery using a multimeter.
Tips & Warnings
- Test the alternator before replacing it — a multimeter should read 13.5-14.5V at the battery with the engine running.
- Inspect the serpentine belt for cracks or wear while it is off and replace if needed.
- A failing voltage regulator (often built into the alternator) can cause overcharging, which damages the battery.
- Take a photo of the belt routing before removal so you can route the new belt correctly.
