U0001: High Speed CAN Communication Bus Fault

CriticalNetworkDIY: Professional

Can you still drive? It depends on the symptoms. If the vehicle runs and all safety systems work, drive cautiously to a shop. If the vehicle will not start or critical systems are down, have it towed.

What Does U0001 Mean?

Code U0001 indicates a malfunction on the high-speed Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The CAN bus is the primary communication backbone that connects all major control modules in the vehicle. A fault here means multiple modules may lose the ability to communicate, potentially disabling numerous vehicle systems simultaneously.

Need to read your codes?

An OBD-II scanner lets you read and clear diagnostic trouble codes from your vehicle's computer. Most scanners work with any car made after 1996.

Common Causes

  • Shorted or open CAN bus wiring
  • Failed CAN bus terminating resistor
  • Control module with shorted CAN transceiver pulling down the bus
  • Corroded CAN bus splice or connector
  • Aftermarket accessory improperly tapped into CAN wiring

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights on dashboard
  • Various systems not functioning
  • No-start condition possible
  • Erratic gauge behavior
  • Multiple unrelated DTCs stored across modules

Diagnostic Steps

  1. 1Scan all modules and note which ones are not communicating
  2. 2Measure CAN bus resistance between CAN-High and CAN-Low (should be approximately 60 ohms)
  3. 3Inspect CAN bus wiring at known splice locations for damage
  4. 4Disconnect modules one at a time to identify a shorted module pulling down the bus
  5. 5Check for aftermarket installations that may have damaged CAN wiring
  6. 6Use an oscilloscope to verify CAN bus signal waveform

Campaign #26V10400020/02/2026

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2026 F-150, 2022-2026 F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, F-550 SD, Maverick, 2024-2026 Ranger, 2023-2026 F-600 SD, 2022-2027 Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, and 2026 E-Transit vehicles. When towing a trailer, the integrated trailer module (ITRM) may lose communication with the vehicle, possibly causing a loss of brake and turn signal lights, or a loss of brake function. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Remedy: The integrated trailer module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 17, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C10. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning March 17, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CAN bus?

The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus is a communication system that allows all the electronic control modules in your vehicle to exchange data. It is like the vehicle's nervous system.

Can an aftermarket radio cause U0001?

Yes, improper installation of aftermarket electronics that tap into or damage CAN bus wiring is a common cause of U0001.

Why are so many warning lights on?

The CAN bus connects all modules. When the bus fails, modules cannot communicate, so each one sets its own fault code and illuminates its warning light.
