P0620: Generator Control Circuit Malfunction

ModeratePowertrainDIY: Advanced

Can you still drive? Drive cautiously to a repair shop. Monitor your battery gauge or voltage. If the battery light stays on, minimize electrical use and keep the trip short.

What Does P0620 Mean?

Code P0620 indicates a fault in the circuit the PCM uses to control the alternator or generator output. Modern vehicles use the PCM to regulate charging voltage based on electrical load and battery condition. When this control circuit fails, the alternator may overcharge, undercharge, or produce inconsistent voltage.

Need to read your codes?

An OBD-II scanner lets you read and clear diagnostic trouble codes from your vehicle's computer. Most scanners work with any car made after 1996.

Common Causes

  • Damaged wiring between PCM and alternator
  • Faulty alternator with internal regulator failure
  • PCM driver circuit failure for generator control
  • Corroded connector at alternator
  • Failed generator control relay

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Battery warning light on
  • Inconsistent charging voltage
  • Battery draining or overcharging
  • Dimming or brightening lights

Diagnostic Steps

  1. 1Measure charging voltage at the battery with engine running
  2. 2Inspect wiring between PCM and alternator for damage
  3. 3Check alternator connector for corrosion
  4. 4Test PCM control signal at the alternator connector
  5. 5Verify alternator field control circuit with a wiring diagram
  6. 6Test alternator output independently

Campaign #26V10400020/02/2026

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2026 F-150, 2022-2026 F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, F-550 SD, Maverick, 2024-2026 Ranger, 2023-2026 F-600 SD, 2022-2027 Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, and 2026 E-Transit vehicles. When towing a trailer, the integrated trailer module (ITRM) may lose communication with the vehicle, possibly causing a loss of brake and turn signal lights, or a loss of brake function. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Remedy: The integrated trailer module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 17, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C10. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning March 17, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the generator control circuit?

It is the wire and signal path the PCM uses to regulate how much voltage the alternator produces. This allows the PCM to optimize charging based on battery state and electrical load.

Can P0620 drain my battery?

Yes, if the alternator is not charging properly due to the control circuit fault, the battery will drain over time and the vehicle may not start.
