P0463: Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input

LowPowertrainDIY: Advanced

Can you still drive? Yes, but your fuel gauge will be unreliable. Track your mileage and refuel based on miles driven rather than the gauge to avoid running out of fuel unexpectedly.

What Does P0463 Mean?

Code P0463 indicates that the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank is sending a voltage signal higher than the expected maximum to the ECM. The fuel level sensor is a variable resistor attached to a float arm. P0463 typically means the sensor circuit has an open or the sensor itself has failed, often causing the fuel gauge to read full at all times regardless of actual fuel level.

Common Causes

  • Faulty fuel level sensor or sending unit
  • Open circuit in fuel level sensor wiring
  • Corroded connector at fuel pump module
  • Damaged float arm in the fuel tank
  • Failed fuel pump module with integrated level sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Fuel gauge stuck on full or reads inaccurately
  • Fuel range estimate may be incorrect
  • EVAP system related codes may also appear

Diagnostic Steps

  1. 1Read fuel level sensor percentage on scan tool and compare to actual fuel level
  2. 2Inspect fuel level sensor connector at the fuel pump module for corrosion
  3. 3Measure resistance at the sensor connector and compare to specification for the current fuel level
  4. 4Check wiring between sensor and ECM/instrument cluster for opens
  5. 5If the sensor is accessible, manually move the float arm and verify resistance changes smoothly

Campaign #26V10400020/02/2026

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2026 F-150, 2022-2026 F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, F-550 SD, Maverick, 2024-2026 Ranger, 2023-2026 F-600 SD, 2022-2027 Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, and 2026 E-Transit vehicles. When towing a trailer, the integrated trailer module (ITRM) may lose communication with the vehicle, possibly causing a loss of brake and turn signal lights, or a loss of brake function. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Remedy: The integrated trailer module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 17, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C10. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning March 17, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can P0463 cause me to run out of gas?

Indirectly, yes. If your fuel gauge is stuck on full, you will not know when you are actually low on fuel. Track your mileage carefully and refuel regularly until the sensor is repaired.

Does P0463 require dropping the fuel tank?

In most cases, yes. The fuel level sensor is part of the fuel pump module assembly inside the tank. Some trucks have an access panel under the rear seat or bed, but most cars require tank removal for replacement.
