P0431: Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

ModeratePowertrainDIY: Advanced

Can you still drive? Yes, it is safe to drive. The vehicle will fail emissions testing and the converter will continue to degrade if the underlying cause is not corrected.

What Does P0431 Mean?

Code P0431 indicates that the warm-up catalytic converter on bank 2 is not operating efficiently enough during the warm-up period. This is the bank 2 counterpart to P0421 and applies to engines with two cylinder banks, such as V6 or V8 configurations. The downstream oxygen sensor on bank 2 shows the converter is underperforming.

Common Causes

  • Worn warm-up catalytic converter on bank 2
  • Faulty downstream oxygen sensor on bank 2
  • Exhaust leak on bank 2 before the converter
  • Rich fuel condition on bank 2
  • Oil or coolant contamination of the catalyst

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Failed emissions test
  • Slight decrease in fuel economy
  • Possible sulfur smell from exhaust

Diagnostic Steps

  1. 1Retrieve freeze frame data and check for bank 2 specific faults
  2. 2Monitor bank 2 upstream and downstream O2 sensor waveforms
  3. 3Inspect bank 2 exhaust for leaks at the manifold and connections
  4. 4Check for engine misfires on bank 2 cylinders that could damage the converter
  5. 5Verify bank 2 fuel trim values are within normal range
  6. 6Test downstream O2 sensor on bank 2 for proper response

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2026 F-150, 2022-2026 F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, F-550 SD, Maverick, 2024-2026 Ranger, 2023-2026 F-600 SD, 2022-2027 Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, and 2026 E-Transit vehicles. When towing a trailer, the integrated trailer module (ITRM) may lose communication with the vehicle, possibly causing a loss of brake and turn signal lights, or a loss of brake function. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Remedy: The integrated trailer module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 17, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C10. Frequently Asked Questions

What is bank 2?

Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder 1. On V6 and V8 engines, bank 2 is the opposite cylinder bank from the primary firing cylinder.

Do I need to replace both catalytic converters?

Not necessarily. If only bank 2 shows the fault, you may only need to replace that converter. However, if both converters are the same age and mileage, the other may fail soon as well.
