P0316: Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions)

ModeratePowertrainDIY: Advanced

Can you still drive? Yes, if the engine runs smoothly after warming up. However, repeated cold-start misfires should be diagnosed to prevent catalytic converter damage.

What Does P0316 Mean?

Code P0316 is a generic OBD-II code that indicates misfires were detected during the first 1000 crankshaft revolutions after engine start. While most commonly seen on Ford vehicles, it can appear on any OBD-II compliant vehicle. This code is significant because cold-start misfires can indicate problems that are masked once the engine reaches operating temperature, such as leaking fuel injectors or weak ignition components that work when warm but fail when cold.

Need to read your codes?

An OBD-II scanner lets you read and clear diagnostic trouble codes from your vehicle's computer. Most scanners work with any car made after 1996.

Common Causes

  • Worn spark plugs with wider gap when cold
  • Weak ignition coil that fails under cold conditions
  • Leaking fuel injector causing a rich condition on one cylinder
  • Low fuel pressure during startup
  • Intake manifold gasket leak that seals when engine heats up

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough or shaky start-up that smooths out after warming up
  • Slight stumble during first few seconds of running
  • Higher emissions during cold start
  • Companion misfire codes (P0301-P0308)

Diagnostic Steps

  1. 1Check for companion cylinder-specific misfire codes
  2. 2Inspect all spark plugs for wear and proper gap
  3. 3Test ignition coils for resistance and output when cold
  4. 4Perform a fuel pressure test during cold start cranking
  5. 5Check for fuel injector leak-down by removing spark plugs after overnight sit and looking for wet cylinders
  6. 6Monitor short-term fuel trims immediately after cold start

Campaign #26V10400020/02/2026

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2026 F-150, 2022-2026 F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, F-550 SD, Maverick, 2024-2026 Ranger, 2023-2026 F-600 SD, 2022-2027 Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, and 2026 E-Transit vehicles. When towing a trailer, the integrated trailer module (ITRM) may lose communication with the vehicle, possibly causing a loss of brake and turn signal lights, or a loss of brake function. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Remedy: The integrated trailer module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 17, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C10. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning March 17, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P0316 only a Ford code?

P0316 is primarily used by Ford and is a manufacturer-specific enhanced code. Other manufacturers may track startup misfires differently or not at all.

Why does my engine only misfire when cold?

Cold-start misfires often occur because ignition components are weaker when cold, fuel injectors may leak overnight allowing fuel to pool in cylinders, or spark plug gaps have widened beyond specification.
