P0172: System Too Rich (Bank 1)
Can you still drive? Yes, but fix it soon. Running rich wastes fuel, fouls spark plugs, and can damage the catalytic converter over time.
What Does P0172 Mean?
Code P0172 indicates that the engine control module has detected a rich air-fuel mixture on bank 1 of the engine. This means there is too much fuel or not enough air entering the combustion chambers. The ECM attempts to compensate by reducing fuel delivery, but when the correction exceeds a threshold, the code is set.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does running rich mean?
Running rich means there is too much fuel compared to air in the combustion mixture. This wastes fuel and can foul spark plugs and damage the catalytic converter.
Can a dirty air filter cause P0172?
Yes, a severely clogged air filter can restrict airflow enough to cause a rich condition. Replace the air filter as a first step.
