P0154: O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

ModeratePowertrainDIY: Advanced

Can you still drive? Yes, but fuel economy will be noticeably worse. Bank 2 is running without feedback-based fuel correction. Repair within one to two weeks.

What Does P0154 Mean?

Code P0154 means the upstream oxygen sensor on Bank 2 is producing no switching activity at all. The voltage output is flat and unchanging, indicating the sensor has completely stopped responding to exhaust gas changes. The ECU loses closed-loop fuel control for Bank 2 and reverts to open-loop operation with a fixed fuel map.

Common Causes

  • Completely failed O2 sensor
  • O2 sensor heater circuit failure
  • Open circuit in sensor wiring
  • Severe sensor contamination

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Rough idle
  • Failed emissions test
  • Possible sulfur smell from exhaust

Diagnostic Steps

  1. 1Read and document freeze frame data
  2. 2Confirm O2 sensor voltage is flat with no switching
  3. 3Check O2 sensor heater circuit for proper operation
  4. 4Inspect sensor wiring for open or damaged circuits
  5. 5Check for severe oil or coolant contamination in exhaust
  6. 6Replace O2 sensor after verifying wiring is intact

Campaign #26V10400020/02/2026

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2026 F-150, 2022-2026 F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, F-550 SD, Maverick, 2024-2026 Ranger, 2023-2026 F-600 SD, 2022-2027 Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, and 2026 E-Transit vehicles. When towing a trailer, the integrated trailer module (ITRM) may lose communication with the vehicle, possibly causing a loss of brake and turn signal lights, or a loss of brake function. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Remedy: The integrated trailer module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 17, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C10. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning March 17, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P0154 worse than P0153?

P0154 is more severe than P0153. A slow sensor (P0153) still provides some feedback, while P0154 means the sensor provides no useful information at all, forcing the ECU into open-loop operation for Bank 2.

Can I drive long distances with P0154?

You can, but expect higher fuel consumption. There is no safety risk, but prolonged operation in open-loop can accelerate catalytic converter wear.
