P0123: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit High Input

HighPowertrainDIY: Moderate

Can you still drive? Do not drive if the engine is racing or behaving erratically. If the vehicle is in limp mode, drive carefully and directly to a repair facility.

What Does P0123 Mean?

Code P0123 is triggered when the throttle position sensor sends a voltage signal that is higher than the expected maximum. This tells the ECU the throttle is wide open when it may not be, leading to incorrect fuel delivery and potential safety concerns. The engine may race or the vehicle may enter limp mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my engine racing with P0123?

The high TPS voltage tells the ECU the throttle is wide open. The engine computer injects more fuel accordingly, causing the engine to race even though you are not pressing the gas pedal.

Can a dirty throttle body cause P0123?

A dirty throttle body alone usually does not cause P0123, but carbon buildup can sometimes affect the TPS mounting or movement, contributing to abnormal readings.
